Most Expensive Juice Box Ever

November 4, 2009 · 2 Comments

Have you ever paid $275 for a juice box?? Well, I have. Really. Or at least that is what I paid to have the juice box in question pulled out of my toilet. Somehow, one of my kids flushed a Capri Sun down the toilet in our master bathroom. The toilet wasn’t flushing properly, so we had to call a plumber. Boy, do to I wish we had some DYI skills in the plumbing department! The plumber tried to snake the toilet and get it unblocked. No such luck. He had to pull the toilet up from the ground and there it was – a Capri Sun lodged at the bottom of our toilet, blocking the water flow. Seriously? Are you kidding me? I am sure this won’t be the last time my kids do something thoughtless that costs us LOTS of money!

Oh, and did I mention that my cell phone broke? Three days after the warranty expired. The best deal Verizon could give me was the two-year pricing plan (which I wasn’t eligible for yet) on a new phone. So, $190 later, I have a new cell phone. I liked my old phone better, but they don’t make the Palm Centro anymore. Bummer! The cell phone business is a racket, in my opinion. While the phone may only cost $100, the taxes are another $40, plus another $50 for the car charger, case, and blue tooth. And have you noticed how every phone has a different plug for charging? What a rip off! Why couldn’t they make one universal one phone charger for all the LG phones or Samsung phones? Oh no, they want you to buy a new car charger everytime you get a new phone. Ugh!

IMG_0721

Oh, yes, and our laser printer is broken. Can’t get anything to print to it. Which is a problem, since I print a lot of coupons on it. I guess I will be spending money to save money when I have to fork out for a new printer. Or hopefully one of the tech geeks in my family can fix it. (Dad, Kevin, any takers??)

IMG_0706

Did I also mention that my husband is going to England this month to see his Dad, who is battling cancer? Flying is not cheap anymore. $809 for a flight to England. Double ugh!

Are you starting to see a theme here? It is going to be a very expensive month for the Wong family…

My Good Samaritans

November 3, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Olly took the older boys to the park on Sunday. On their walk home, they came across an elderly woman collapsed on the sidewalk. She was breathing, but there was a lot of blood, and she was very disoriented. Olly used his cell phone to call 911 and they stayed with her until the ambulance took her away. She was pretty old, born in 1917. Olly said she looked like the lady from the Titanic movie – really OLD! She had no idea where she was, and no one in the neighborhood knew her. How sad to be 92, wondering around by yourself, slip and fall, and no one even knows you are missing.

Anyway, I was very proud of all my boys. Olly said the boys stayed calm and did great. They were, of course, very excited to see the fire truck and ambulance. I also learned that Olly deals with this kind of stuff all the time. He said it is almost daily that they have to call 911 for an injured student or teacher, or a medical condition such as a heart attack. We didn’t have much of that when I taught elementary school, but apparently at a high school with 3,000+ kids, there is a lot more drama!

I took the boys walking this morning, and they were very excited to show me where they found the lady. They told me all about how they were good Samaritans. Christophe asked me over and over again on the walk, “Wanna see the blood, Mom?” When we passed the spot where they found the lady, there was no blood. Someone must have cleaned it up, and Christophe was very disappointed. “But, Mom, I wanted to see the blood…”

Haircut

Check out Marius’ new haircut…

  IMG_0665  IMG_0668

I had the clippers out the other day so I could trim Marius’ hair. I was thinking about clipping it all over, but I didn’t want it to be too short. I tried the #5 on the bottom part of his hair and decided that it would be too short on the top. My mom was there at the time, and she had to leave, so I walked her to the front door. I left the clipper and the trimmer outside, after telling the boys to leave everything alone.  A minute later, Marius ran up to me and said, “Mommy, look!” He leaned his head down, and I could see that he had taken the little trimmer and run it across the top of his head, shaving his hair to the scalp. I couldn’t believe it! I was pretty unhappy, and I think my reaction made it even worse. He started crying and screaming, saying, “Grow it back, Mommy. Put my hair back on!”

Being the great mom I am, I decided I should take a picture so we could remember it. Marius didn’t like this at all, and he ran away from me. He hid in the laundry room and had a complete meltdown. This set all the kids off, so I had three tired, hungry boys crying and losing their minds. I threw them all in the bath to wash the hair off (they all had haircuts) and then we had a picnic lunch in their bedroom. (There was no way they were going to make it back down stairs for lunch.) We can all laugh about it now, but in the moment, it didn’t seem too funny. If I slick Marius’ hair all the way over the bald section, it isn’t all that noticeable. He won’t be getting a haircut for awhile, though – that’s for sure!

It must be true…

October 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

It must be true what they say about cats… you know, that they have nine lives.

Take a look at this drop.

IMG_0615

It must be 9 or 10 feet from the top of the stairs to the bottom level. Our kitty likes to crawl along the outside edge of the staircase. Yesterday, Bugsy was walking along the ledge and my boys tried to grab him. As I was telling my kids to leave him alone, Christophe somehow managed to knock him off, and he fell to the ground below. I just about had a heart attack, and I ran down to see if he was okay. He must have landed on his feet, because he had scampered off and was hiding under the table. The boys got a major scolding.

Our poor cat! I am sure this won’t be the last time the boys manage to torture him! Fortunately, he wasn’t hurt at all.

Shopping with Kids

October 17, 2009 · 8 Comments

I think my least favorite thing about being a mom is taking three kids out shopping with me. But what can I do? I have a husband who works long hours and not many options for childcare, so I can often been seen lugging three unhappy kids around while I grocery shop and run other errands. Especially now that I am couponing. I save a ton of money, but it does require more trips to different stores to use certain coupons while things are on sale. As you can imagine, my kids just love running errands (yeah, right!) Some days they do great, but other days are a disaster.

Yesterday was my least favorite kind of day, because we had a few errands to run and I had all three kids with me. We had to take our kitty to the vet, and the boys did fine there. We had to make  a stop afterwards at Walgreens and Kohls. I only needed to get a few things at Walgreens, so I thought we’d be pretty quick. The boys immediately found the toy aisle and started trying to sneak toys into our grocery cart. They were not happy with my firm, “no, maybe for Christmas.” We got up to the check stand, and the checker was an idiot (sorry, I know that sounds rude, but it was true). She didn’t want to take some of my coupons, which were valid. She forgot to take some of my coupons on one transaction. The manager ended up having to come up twice to answer coupons questions and void a transaction. Meanwhile, Marius brought up every toy imaginable to the check stand, asking, “Mom, can we get this one?? Please??” Every time I would answer no, he would start crying, begging, whining, and melting down. I was trying to talk to the checker, and Marius kept bringing up this ball he wanted me to buy and interrupting me. Another checker had to open a check stand because my line was taking so long. The boys started jacking up the display by the check stand, piling little boxes up and knocking them over. Christophe came over to me with greasy, white hands, because he decided to help himself to a bottle of lotion he found by the check stand. The boys also found some little flashlights that kept them occupied for a minute. We were quite the sight - two wild boys running around causing havoc and a mommy arguing over coupons. Jacques was pretty good; I only had to take him out of the cart once when he got bored. By the time we got out to the car, I was pretty mortified and very upset with my kids. I know they are just kids, and maybe I am expecting too much of them. But I am not sure how to teach them that we will not buy a toy every time we go to the store.

I must be a glutton for punishment, because I still took the kids to Kohls. I really needed to get some clothes for Marius, I had a coupon for Kohls, and honestly, I didn’t want to make another trip later. So after a stern lecture, we headed into Kohls. Marius found some Matchbox cars that became his new obsession while I browsed the clothes. Marius kept begging me to the buy them. The best line was when he said, “But Mommm, I said please so you have to buy them for me.” The lady standing next to me and I both bursting out laughing. That was a good one, huh? We finished shopping and averted any more major tantrums. When we got to the check stand, my boys found the carts and started driving them around like race cars and putting stuffed animals into the carts. They also found some purses. Marius desperately wanted me to buy him a purse (a pink and black one). I had to tell him ”no” again, but I agreed to let him use some of my old purses at home. Olly’s gonna love that!

Today, we made a couple more quick stops after Marius’ soccer game. We headed into Old Navy on the search for more clothes for Marius. (I am finding that the selection for older boys is more limited and the prices are a lot higher, hence multiple shopping trips to search for some winter clothes, which seems funny since it is over 90 degrees today!) While I was checking out, the boys were playing up front by the benches. Somehow, Christophe fell down and bumped his head. He started crying at the top of his lungs. I was holding him and trying to figure out if Marius pushed him or not, while paying for a pair of pants. I told Marius to go sit on the bench, but he wouldn’t listen and took off to pet a mannequin dog that was on display. As I was telling him off, one of my good friend’s mom walked in. Gotta love it when you see someone you know and your kids are totally misbehaving.

Lastly, we headed over to Target, which actually turned out to be a smooth shopping trip. Until we got to the check stand, and Marius saw all the little hanging toys. He kept asking for a couple toys he wanted. When that didn’t work, he put two toys on the check stand and said, ”But Mom, I am gonna get these for your birthday. These are for you. I’m gonna make you a basket for your birthday.” Well, that’s a new one! Isn’t that funny? This kid is so manipulative (just like his mommy!)

How do you stay sane during shopping trips with your kids? How do you make it fun for your kids? (Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!)

Smelly

October 14, 2009 · 1 Comment

So tonight, Marius told me, “You smell, Mommy.” I said, “That’s rude, Marius.” He replied, “But I just smelled you, and you smell. Daddy smells, too. Well, I just love my Daddy, but he smells.” Seriously? Do we need to get a new brand of deodrant or something? I swear, we both shower once or twice a day!

Here is a cute photo of my boys taken today. Aren’t they sweet?

I love my kids!

October 13, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I think my kids are hilarious. They crack me up with all the crazy things they say. We were to an autumn party last weekend, and the boys got to paint pumpkins. Christophe told me that he was painting a sad face on his pumpkin. Then he was painting a bad face on his pumpkin. He told me that big pumpkins don’t cry, only little pumpkins cry. Where does the kid get this stuff?

The other day, Marius told me, “I want a girl baby.” I said, “Oh really?” Marius said, “Yeah, girl babies are way more fun. I don’t want a boy baby anymore.” I asked, “Are you talking about baby Jacques?” Marius said, ”Yeah. Can we trade him in for a girl? I want a sister.” Hilarious. I couldn’t make this stuff up.

Christophe is very sweet and thoughtful. The other day, he told me, “It’s very beautiful in here. In our home.” Why, thank you, Christophe. I will take any compliment I can get around here.

Today, Christophe told Olly, “I love you all the time, Daddy.” Everyday when Olly walks in the door, Christophe asks, “How was your day, Daddy?” or tells him, “I miss you when you go to work.” Such a sweet boy!

Today, Christophe told me, “Mom, I’m gonna marry you.” I asked him why and he replied, “Because I want to.” I’ve heard that most little boys want to marry their mommy at some point, but Marius never said this. Of course, he is betrothed to our friend’s daughter, Reagan. In fact, when Christophe said he wanted to marry me, Marius piped up with, “And I’m gonna marry Reagan.”
